Dangote Refinery’s $1.6 Billion IPO Draws International Investor Interest

Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s public share offering is attracting attention beyond Nigeria, turning what could have been a domestic fundraising exercise into a significant cross-border investment story for Africa.

The refinery is seeking to raise approximately $1.6 billion through its initial public offering, with shares offered at ₦525 each. The offer, which opened on September 14 and is scheduled to close on October 13, gives investors an opportunity to take an ownership stake in one of Africa’s largest industrial projects.

Interest is extending across national borders. Kenya’s capital-markets regulator has approved a short-form prospectus allowing eligible Kenyan investors to participate through a global depository receipt structure. The move could make it easier for capital from another major African economy to flow into a Nigerian industrial asset.

The scale of investor interest is also notable. Dangote Refinery’s chief executive said the company is targeting as many as 10 million retail investors, reflecting an ambition to make the offering accessible beyond large institutional funds.

For African capital markets, the offering represents more than another IPO. A successful transaction could demonstrate that major African industrial companies can attract substantial domestic and international investment while broadening public ownership.

The refinery is also expanding its production ambitions, with current capacity of 700,000 barrels per day and plans to increase this to 1.4 million barrels per day.

As the October 13 deadline approaches, investor participation will provide an important measure of confidence in both Dangote Refinery and the ability of African markets to mobilise capital at continental scale.
